The Shire of Boyup Brook is seeking public comment prior to Council considering the DUAL NAMING of the Blackwood River to include its Aboriginal name – Goorbilyup. This proposal has been initiated by the Shire of Bridgetown Greenbushes and is being presented to all Shires that run along the Blackwood River - Shire of West Arthur and Boyup Brook, through Kaneang Country, to the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes, Nannup and Augusta-Margaret River, through Bibbulmun and Wadandi country. This proposal has no cost to the Shire.
The Aboriginal name for the Blackwood River is the same for each language group so there is only one Aboriginal name to use along the length of the Blackwood River. The dual naming of the Blackwood River, acknowledges our local indigenous culture, stories and the significance of the Goorbilyup as a sacred site to First Nations People.
To submit your comments, please email the Shire at shire@boyupbrook.wa.gov.au with ‘Dual Naming of the Blackwood River’ in the subject line, or post your comments to the Shire of Boyup Brook, PO Box 2, Boyup Brook WA 6244. Closing date for comments is Friday 6th October 2023.
