Becoming an Elected Member - Information for Candidates
There are many great reasons why locals choose to nominate for Council – from the satisfaction of giving back to the community, to having a say in the future direction of our beautiful region. Serving as an Elected Member for the Shire of Boyup Brook is a rewarding opportunity, offering a chance to contribute to decisions that shape our Shire and community.
Local Government Elections are held every two years with four Elected Member positions open, offering community members the opportunity to step forward and represent Boyup Brook. This year’s Local Government Election is being held on 18 October 2025. Nominations open 28 August 2025 and close at 4:00pm on 4 September 2025.

Important information to note:
- All potential candidates are required to complete a mandatory candidate induction before nominating. You will be required to register your completion of the course and will receive a confirmation email with a reference number and date of completion. You must include the reference number and completion date on your nomination form. This course must be completed by all candidates, including all existing Councillors running for re-election. Details are available on the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety website.
- Candidates and donors also have an obligation to disclose any election-related gifts received or promised in the six months leading up to polling day.
- As per the Local Government Act 1995, all candidates must follow the Shire of Boyup Brook Code of Conduct for Council Members, Committee Members and Candidates. This applies throughout the election period and continues if elected. Breaches of the code may result in formal complaints and action under the Act.
Information for Voters
Who is eligible to vote?
In order to be eligible to vote, you must:
- Be an Australian Citizen.
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Have lived at your present address for at least one month prior to the close of enrolments.
In addition, you need to be either:
A resident within the Shire of Boyup Brook (your normal place of residence is within the Shire), and you appear on the State electoral roll (i.e. you are enrolled to vote at elections)
OR
A non-resident or occupier provided:
- You are on the State or Commonwealth electoral rolls for your normal place of residence outside the Shire of Boyup Brook.
- You own or occupy rateable property in the Shire of Boyup Brook (e.g. commercial premises by way of legal instrument like a lease for a minimum three (3) month term).
- You have made a successful eligibility claim (see enrolment eligibility form) with the Shire that is still current.
You can update your state electoral enrolment through the Western Australian Electoral Commission website.
Non-resident owner
If you personally own rateable property in the Shire of Boyup Brook but do not reside in that property, you may be eligible to be enrolled on the owners and occupiers roll, provided you are enrolled to vote in a district outside of the Shire of Boyup Brook.
Non-resident occupier
If you occupy a property in the Shire of Boyup Brook, you may be eligible to be enrolled on the owners and occupiers roll, provided you are already enrolled to vote in a State or Federal election in a district outside of the Shire of Boyup Brook.
From 1 January 2024, amendments to the Local Government Act 1995 and Elections Regulations set out new requirements an occupier must meet to be eligible to be enrolled to vote in Local Government Elections.

Business/body corporate property owners
If your business/body corporate owns a property in the Shire of Boyup Brook, you may be eligible to nominate up to two people, who are not already enrolled to vote within the Shire of Boyup Brook, to vote on your business'/body corporate's behalf, provided they are enrolled to vote in a State or Federal election.
Nominees must be an employee of the body corporate.
Postal Election
The Shire of Boyup Brook has appointed the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) to conduct its elections by postal vote.
All eligible electors will receive a postal voting package approximately three weeks prior to polling day. The package will include a list of candidates, ballot papers, instructions on how to vote and a declaration. We encourage you to complete your package and return it via post in the reply paid envelope. Alternatively, following the delivery of ballot paper packages to electors, a ballot box will be available at the Shire of Boyup Brook Administration Office, Monday to Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm and on election day from 8:00am - 6:00pm.

Non-Resident Owner
Owns rateable property in the electorate as a sole owner, or one of two co-owners.
Form 2 Enrolment Eligibility Claim Owner or Co-Owner
Occupier
Has held a right of occupation to a rateable property in the Shire of Boyup Brook for at least twelve months and has a right to continuous occupation of rateable property in the electorate under a lease, tenancy agreement or other legal instrument for a period of at least three months, as sole occupier or one of two occupiers of the property.
Form 2A Enrolment Eligibility Claim Occupier or Co-Occupier
Co-Owner Nominee
Owns rateable property in the electorate as one of more than two co-owners; and is one of up to two nominees, nominated by all or a majority of the co-owners.
Form 2B Enrolment Eligibility Claim Group of Owners/Occupiers
Co-Occupier Nominee
Has held a right of occupation to a rateable property in the Shire of Boyup Brook for at least twelve months and has a right to continuous occupation of rateable property in the electorate under a lease, tenancy agreement or other legal instrument for a period of at least three months, in conjunction with two or more other people and is one of up to two nominees, nominated by all or a majority of the occupiers.
Form 2B Enrolment Eligibility Claim Group of Owners/Occupiers
Body Corporate Owner / Occupier Nominee
Is one of up to two nominees of a body corporate that owns or has held a right of occupation to a rateable property in the Shire of Boyup Brook for at least twelve months and has a right to continuous occupation of rateable property in the electorate under a lease, tenancy agreement or other legal instrument for a period of at least three months.
