Magpie Swooping Season
Spring means magpie nesting season, and you may encounter a protective magpie defending its nest and young.
Magpies generally only swoop for a few weeks while nesting and rearing their chicks, so there are some simple ways we can reduce the risk and live safely alongside them.
If you encounter a swooping magpie:
- Don’t provoke or harass the bird. Never throw sticks, stones or other objects at a magpie. This can make the bird more defensive and may encourage repeated swooping.
- Avoid known swooping areas where possible. Magpies generally defend a relatively small area around their nest.
- Stay calm and keep moving. Don’t run or crouch in fear. Move away from the area confidently and at a steady pace.
- Protect your head and eyes. Wear a hat and sunglasses, or carry an umbrella. If cycling, wear a helmet and consider getting off your bike and walking through the area.
- Take extra care with children. Swooping can be frightening for young children, so explain that the magpie is protecting its babies and show them what to do if they encounter one.
Remember, magpies are simply protecting their young. By understanding their behaviour and taking a few simple precautions, we can safely share our community with these familiar and much-loved birds.
