Preventing Accidental Fires – Be Prepared Before You Start

With warmer and drier conditions approaching, the Shire of Boyup Brook reminds residents and landholders of the importance of taking simple precautions when undertaking activities that could accidentally ignite a fire.

Everyday tasks such as mowing, slashing, grinding, welding and operating machinery can produce sparks or generate heat capable of igniting dry grass and other combustible materials.

A small spark can quickly become a serious fire, particularly in dry or windy conditions.

Before commencing work, ensure you have suitable firefighting equipment immediately available. This may include:

  • A filled and operational water unit positioned nearby.
  • An appropriate, serviced fire extinguisher readily accessible.
  • A reliable water supply with sufficient reach and pressure.
  • A means of contacting emergency services if a fire starts.

Simply having a garden hose somewhere on the property may not provide adequate protection if a fire develops away from the water source.

Residents are also encouraged to monitor weather conditions, assess the surrounding vegetation and avoid activities that could create sparks during periods of elevated fire danger.

Remember, our volunteer firefighters generously give their time to protect our community. Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent avoidable callouts and reduce the risk to people, property and the environment.

If a fire starts, only attempt to extinguish it if it is safe to do so. Move to safety and call 000 if the fire cannot be immediately and safely controlled.

Always check current fire restrictions, Total Fire Bans and Harvest and Vehicle Movement Bans before starting work. This information can be found HERE

Be prepared. Work safely. Prevent accidental fires.
