Baby Memorial at Sandakan Park Refurbished

The Baby Memorial at Sandakan Park has been given a fresh new look, with improvements designed to enhance this special place of remembrance while retaining its important connection to the community.

The refurbishment includes a new accessible pathway connecting the memorial to the park and playground, new rose bushes replacing those that had deteriorated, and a new bench seat providing a quiet place to sit and reflect. A replica of the original wooden seat remains in the centre of the roses, preserving an important feature of the memorial. The memorial plaque has also been refurbished, with fresh mulch and additional plantings completing the rejuvenation.

The memorial was officially opened on Friday, 22 August 2003, following an initiative organised by Margaret Reeve, who was a nurse at the Boyup Brook Health Service at the time. It also features the Pioneer Lady hologram, created by the late Sandy Chambers.

The rejuvenation project was championed by Sue White, who approached the Shire with the suggestion that, rather than relocating the memorial, it should remain in its current location. The site holds deep sentimental value for many past and present community members, making it important to preserve its place within Sandakan Park.

A special thank you goes to Sue for helping bring the project to life, and the Boyup Brook Community Shed for making the replica wooden seat.

The completed improvements ensure the Baby Memorial remains a peaceful and welcoming place for people to pause, reflect and remember.
