How Do I Ask a Question at a Council Meeting?
In accordance with the Local Government (Administration) Regulations, a minimum of 15 minutes is made available for public question time at each Council meeting. During question time, members of the public are given the opportunity to ask a question of Council about an issue concerning the meeting at which it is asked.
The Shire promotes the practice of questions being supplied in writing a couple of weeks in advance of the meeting, particularly if a detailed response is desired, as this provides officers with the opportunity to fully address the question at the meeting.
At the Shire we are committed to involving the public in the decision-making process. The ability to ask a question at our Council meetings is viewed as an integral part of the public's ability to participate.
At the Shire of Boyup Brook, as Committees do not have delegated powers to make decisions, their recommendations are put before Council for a decision to be made. When considering recommendations, Council may:
- Accept the recommendation put forward and adopt it en bloc without further debate/discussion
- Withdraw a particular item for further discussion or modification or propose that another course of action be taken
- Defer making a decision on an item, pending further consideration/discussion at an appropriate meeting.
As such, recommendations from a committee meeting cannot be implemented until approval is given by Council.
